Class Description and Goals:
Welcome to AVID (which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination)! I hope everyone is as excited as I am to begin a fun and academically challenging new school year. The AVID program at WMS was designed to ensure that participating student develop the skills and work habits necessary to perform quality work and succeed at the college level.
In this class, we will employ various methods to help students achieve their goals. Much of our time will be spent in tutorial groups working on subject areas you feel you need to study. We will also be welcoming various guest speakers into our class as well as venturing out into the community to observe challenging and exciting work environments. We will also be researching and visiting various college campuses. Moreover, you will be given assignments to improve your skill level in 4 vital areas: writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. As you can see, the AVID elective is an academic and rigorous elective; it requires both student commitment and parent support. I hope we can all count on each other to have a stimulating and fruitful year.
Class Policies:
1) Absences – Absences can negatively affect your grade. If you incur too many absences in your AVID or academic classes (more than 3 per quarter is too many), you may be dropped from the program.
2) No Work, No Play – You may not have any zeros or missing assignments in AVID. If you have any missing assignments, you will not be eligible to attend field trips. In addition, you must have a grade of ‘C’ or better in all classes to maintain eligibility.
3) Referrals/Behavior – Because AVID asks students to engage in the program willingly, behavioral problems of any sort will not be tolerated. If a student’s behavior is seen as disrespectful (in any class), the student may be removed from the program.
4) Grades – Students must be dedicated to their own success. Progress will be monitored closely by the AVID teacher. Any student who cannot maintain a ‘C’ in all classes will be placed on academic probation and may be removed from the program.
5) Binders – Students are expected to maintain a clean, neat, an organized binder and backpack. These will be checked and graded weekly.
6) Cornell Notes – The skill of writing and refining notes will be a focus this year. Notes will be checked every other week in addition to binders. Quality and quantity expectations will increase as the year progresses.
How to Reach Me:
